Niantic, Connecticut, is the kind of coastal gem that’s perfect for a day trip or a weekend escape. Whether you’re into scenic walks, beachy vibes, or charming small-town spots, this place has a little something for everyone. Let me share some favorite ways to enjoy all that Niantic has to offer. You might just find your next favorite getaway spot!

Visit Rocky Neck State Park

Rocky Neck State Park offers stunning views of Long Island Sound and a variety of outdoor activities. You can enjoy hiking, swimming, and picnicking, as well as explore the park’s tidal wetlands and beach. You can also tour the historic Pavilion seasonally.

Grab a Bite to Eat at La Llorona

La Llorona Progressive Mexican Cuisine is a great spot to grab a bite to eat and drinks. My go-to are street tacos, but there are honestly so many good things on the menu. I’d also highly recommend getting a flight of margaritas!

Visit the Book Barn

The Book Barn is a unique independent bookstore known for its extensive collection of used books across various genres. The bookstore is a great spot to visit for book lovers, providing not only a great selection but also an inviting atmosphere that encourages browsing for hours. Oh, and did I mention there are cats and goats?

Walk the Niantic Bay Boardwalk

This boardwalk is a 1.1 mile walking path that runs between Cini Park and Hole in the Wall Beach along Niantic Bay. This is a beautiful spot to walk for a sunrise and it’s also one of my favorite spots to watch the sunset in the winter months. Be sure to also enjoy the beaches that can be found on either side of the boardwalk.

Book a Trip With Blackhawk Sport Fishing

Blackhawk Fishing offers deep-sea fishing trips for anglers of all experience levels. The company specializes in chartered fishing excursions, targeting species like striped bass, black sea bass, and flounder in the waters off Long Island Sound. With a professional crew and top-notch equipment, Black Hawk Fishing provides a memorable experience for those looking to enjoy a day on the water and reel in a big catch. They also offer fun trips like seal and sunset cruises for those who don’t fish.

Grab Ice Cream at Gumdrops and Lollipops

A short walk from the Niantic Bay Boardwalk is this cute shop to grab ice cream or another sweet treat. It’s open year-round and it has both indoor and outdoor seating. The ice cream and unique candies are something you have to try if you’re in Niantic!

Go for a hike at Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve

This nature preserve is a true hidden gem in coastal Niantic. This 400-acre preserve features miles of scenic trails through beautiful woodlands. I love walking the trail along Clark Pond and through the old quarry at the preserve.

get Pizza at Vincitori Apizza

Get delicious Apizza without having to go into the hustle and bustle of New Haven. Instead, grab a delicious New Haven-style pizza in downtown Niantic at Vincitori Apizza. My favorite is the Calabrese.

Enjoy the Park and Beach at McCook Point Park

McCook Point Park is a beautiful waterfront park offering stunning views of Long Island Sound. The park features picnic areas, a small beach, walking paths, and a playground, making it a perfect spot for families. It’s a great spot to visit year-round to enjoy the shoreline.

Spend the Day at the niantic Children’s museum

Sift Bake Shop has become a favorite local spot for anyone craving sweet and savory baked goods. Oh, and did I mention it’s owned by Adam Young who won Food Network’s Best Baker in America in 2017?

Go Thrifting at Past to Present

If you’re someone who likes to thrift, be sure to check out Past to Present in downtown Niantic. They have new inventory every day. Be sure to check out their famous dollar room in the back for a good deal.

Grab Breakfast at Deke’s bagels

Deke’s Bagels is a popular spot for freshly made bagels that are both soft on the inside and perfectly crisp on the outside. Known for their variety of flavors and creative toppings, the bagels are a local favorite for breakfast. Deke’s has become a go-to destination for bagel lovers in the area.

Step Back in Time At The Thomas Lee House

The Thomas Lee House is right up the road from the entrance to Rocky Neck State Park. This house is one of the oldest wood frame houses in Connecticut in its primitive state. It was built in 1660. The docents here are very knowledgeable and kind!
