Historical Information
Construction on the lighthouse began in 1854, and stands at an impressive height of 171 feet. It is located on the north end Atlantic City and is New Jersey’s tallest lighthouse. The construction of the lighthouse was a response to the increasing number of shipwrecks that occurred along the New Jersey coastline during that time.
The original first-order Fresnel lens played a crucial role in guiding ships through the treacherous waters of the Atlantic Ocean until it was officially decommissioned in 1933. Its location at Absecon Inlet made it an essential navigational aid for ships traveling from Philadelphia to New York City. When it was first put into service, the light could be seen for 19.5 nautical miles.
In 1971, the structure was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Inlet Public/Private Association (IPPA) adopted the lighthouse in 1994 and began raising funds for its restoration. In 1997, the restoration of the tower began.
